Hailed as a second Ibiza, Malta has become synonymous with a great party and festival scene. Most especially during the warmer months, which tentatively kick off around May, those searching for a memorable event to mark their holidays, are in for a treat! The only problem here is that you might be spoiled for choice…
These are our top choice events which span from May to October:
- Notte Bianca, October 2022
Notte Bianca, also known as Lejl Imdawwal (in Maltese), is one of the biggest and most anticipated annual events which is held across all corners of the capital city, Valletta – from Triton Fountain and City Gate, till Fort St Elmo. It is a spectacle of light and colour; a myriad entertaining, leisurely or cultural events offers visitors the opportunity to visit museums, galleries, to do some late-night shopping, visit spaces and places which are usually closed off to the public, or even attend an outdoor concert or recital. We recommend crossing over to Valletta by ferry, a few minutes walk along the Sliema promenade.
2. The Farsons Beer Festival, 28 July until the 6 August
Because seriously… who doesn’t love beer? Organised by top award-winning Maltese brewer Farsons, the festival has become a staple on the calendar for many local residents and tourists, alike. A jam-packed 10-day festival, which not only features local and foreign beers, but also a variety of world food, gigs, concerts, and a whole lot of entertainment! All set within the beautiful National Park at Ta’ Qali. What makes this event even tastier, is that admission is completely free of charge.
3. Earth Garden, 3 to 7 of June
Earth Garden is the festival of good vibes and alternative music! Also held at the National Park in Ta’ Qali, this festival has as many as 5 stages, playing a mixture of sounds and musical genres, which range from Funk, Ska, World Music, Dub, Hip-Hop, Psy-Trance, Techno, House and more. Another unique festival feature is the campsite area, allowing festival goers to maximise on the 4-day weekend and all its spaces and activities, which also include a workshop and healing area, an international food court and an ethnic market, amongst others.
4. Isle of MTV, 19 July
One of the smallest annual music festivals in Europe, Isle of MTV has been held in Malta since 2007, at the Granaries in Floriana – just a stone’s throw away from the entrance to Valletta. Attended by thousands of music lovers, this free-of-charge one- night-only event, has become increasingly popular because of its international line-up of artists, often supported by Maltese bands and singers.
5. The Malta Jazz Festival, 11 to the 16 July
Having celebrated its 30th anniversary, the Malta Jazz Festival is a highly sought after and very well-attended event. In recent editions, several pop-up gigs have been organised in the capital city; however, the main, open-air stage and event takes place at the water’s edge in Ta’ Liesse in Valletta against the mesmerising backdrop of the Grand Harbour and the Three Cities. The 7-day long event always features an impressive line-up of international and Malta-based artists.
